Michael Jackson and Mother Teresa. Stephen Hawking and the Dalai Lama. And now Shakira.
The Colombian pop singer — famous for hits like “Hips Don’t Lie” and “Whenever, Wherever” — joined a diverse group of luminaries when she addressed the Oxford Union on Monday. Here is the video of the occasion along with her pinky wallpapers…
The 32-year-old, who is also a UNICEF ambassador, used her speech to hundreds of Oxford students to stress her belief in education for all. Many students had waited in the rain to see the pop star’s appearance at the university’s famous debating society.
“I was born in Colombia, growing up in the developing world where education is perceived as a luxury and not as a birthright,” she said.
The pop star runs a charity that builds schools for poor children in Colombia. Shakira said her singing career has helped her campaign.
“I think those two paths have been so parallel in my life,” she said. “My career gives me an enormous opportunity to communicate issues that I believe strongly should be communicated.”
Oxford Union spokesman Conan McKenzie said Shakira’s philanthropy was one reason to invite her, but added that “she’s an immensely popular singer with a large fan base among Oxford students. And the Oxford Union has a tradition of inviting a wide variety of speakers.”
Adding another trophy to her already impressive collection, Shakira was among the winners at the 2009 Bambi Awards in Potsdam, Germany on Thursday (November 26).
Held at the Metropolis hall at Filmpark Babelsberg, the “Hips Don’t Lie” singer was crowned as the top International Pop Artist at the glitzy awards ceremony. Not only on-hand to collect her trophy, Shakira also dazzled the crowd with an energetic performance during the course of the evening’s festivities.
With stars such as Kate Winslet also in attendance, the Bambi Awards are put on by Hubert Burda Media to recognize excellence in international media and television.

Spending the day out on the red carpet, Shakira looked gorgeous as she arrived for the 2009 Bambi Awards in Potsdam, Germany on Thursday (November 26).

And with her new album “She Wolf” just recently having been released, Shakira recently dished on teaming with director Sophie Muller for her new “Did It Again” video.
“It was a collaboration between this friend of mine who’s a dancer, and me. She showed me this contemporary dance piece that was produced in Iceland. So we said, ‘Hey, maybe we could do something like this for Did It Again,’” Shakira said. “So we brought this choreographer from Iceland from this contemporary dance company, and we worked on this piece.”
The 32-year-old Colombian cutie added, “And I decided to bring a little bit of this painter, [Lawrence] Alma-Tadema, who portrays women in these bathrooms, these Turkish bathrooms, and I wanted to bring a little bit of that poetic imagery to this video. And I remember not too long ago having watched a few women turn their heads in a trans in Morocco. So we brought all these pieces — Moroccan women twirling and turning their heads, and the poetry from Alma-Tadema’s paintings, plus this Icelandic contemporary dance piece — and we mixed all these pieces together for the video.”

US rock legends Foo Fighters and Colombian superstar Shakira were revealed as the latest in the lineup of performers at this year’s MTV Europe Music Awards (EMA 2009).
Siren Shakira, known for not only her impressive vocal range but her fluid, sexy dancing ability, first caught the world’s attention on MTV’s first ever Spanish-language MTV Unplugged in 1999. International smash hit album ‘Laundry Service’ followed, as did simultaneous Spanish and English language albums ‘Fijacion Oral Vol.1′ and ‘Oral Fixation Vol.2 which spawned the worldwide hits ‘La Tortura’ and ‘Hips Don’t Lie’. Shakira’s current track ‘She Wolf’ has been let loose around the world in advance of the release of her third studio album of the same name.
Before Shakira facing EMA 2009, she added:
“I am very excited to perform at this year’s EMAs in Berlin. Every time I perform at the EMAs I have such a great time. I can’t wait to see you all in Berlin on November 5th!”
The Columbian pop singer has been attending history of western civilization courses with prestigious professor Robert Cleve, who has his doctorate in the subject, at the University of California, Los Angeles UCLA for over a month.
Shakira’s manager Ceci Kurzman told The Associated Press that:
“She went when she finished her tour, for the summer,”
Shakira, known for last year’s “Hips Don’t Lie” and other hits, released her first album at age 14 and later took time off to finish high school.
Still, Professor Robert Cleve is indeed a heavyweight in the department, so hopefully Shakira’s learning something. At least she’s not spending her summer hitting on helplessly star struck as ShakiraUCLA students — rumor has it that James Franco’s been making eyes at my friend Mindy (not to mention checking out the local pubs) on their Shakespeare study-abroad program.
“She told me she was visiting from Colombia and that she was just doing this for her own enlightenment and enjoyment,” Cleve said. “She looked like just an ordinary Shakira UCLA student. She wasn’t flamboyant … she didn’t act like a big celebrity or anything.”
Shakira, who sat near the front in the third row of the lecture hall, would often discuss the course material with him after class.
Cleve Said:
“I was really impressed with how intelligent she was,”
